What is the difference between AIS and DSC?

AIS (Automatic Identification System) and DSC (Digital Selective Calling) are both marine digital communication systems, but they have different primary functions: AIS tracks and displays the identity and movement of other vessels, while DSC is a voice communication system that uses digital messaging for automated alerts, such as distress calls.

AIS is for visual, real-time tracking, while DSC is a digital messaging method for specific calls like a Mayday.
